Media Studies summer work

Overview

Welcome to A Level Media Studies.

The work

You will be investigating the varied and fascinating world of the media through the Eduqas specification. Below are tasks designed to give you a taste of the course.

1. ‘My media consumption’.
Make a note of the main texts you ‘consume’ under the following headings:

  • Television
  • Newspapers
  • Radio
  • Videogames
  • Music video

You might not consume any for particular areas, which is fine. Just note down particular texts e.g. Specific TV programmes, music videos or videogames that you enjoy.

Are there any links between these texts? Which technologies do you use to consume them?

Have you ever created your own media text?

2. Black Panther (Ryan Coogler 2018)
Black Panther is one of our key texts and is studied under the heading of Film Marketing. What are the main ways in which this text was marketed? To answer this question, you will need to make notes on how the poster, trailer and any other marketing tools were used to sell the film. Which themes, representations, companies and visual/aural elements were used in order to engage the potential consumer? Use images from the marketing elements to illustrate your points.

3. Creative task. Your brief:
You have been asked to come up with an idea for a 3 part police/detective drama series for a pre-watershed 15 to 18 youth audience. The series will be screened on BBC3. Create a 500-1000 word ‘pitch’, which outlines your ideas for this new series. You will need to consider:

  • Key characters
  • Setting
  • Themes
  • Any particular stylistic elements i.e. the ‘look’ of your programme
  • The narrative for this ‘one-off’ three-part show
  • The audience for BBC3 programming

Please complete all of this work for your first Media Studies lesson in September.
