Religious Studies summer work

Overview

Welcome to A Level Religious Studies! We are looking forward to meeting you in September. In the meantime, there is a lot you can do to prepare for the course.

The work

The course covers three units: Buddhism, Ethics and Philosophy of Religion.

We start in the first term with Buddhism and Ethics, so we have created a few tasks to get you started thinking about these topics and give you an indication of the kind of ideas we will be discussing.

There are also some links to general reading on all three units, so have fun over the summer exploring the world of RS!

Compulsory (4-5 hours)

Task 1: Buddhism
Watch the documentary about Buddhism below and complete the worksheet. Bring your completed worksheet in to your first RS lesson.

Task 2: Ethics
Watch the video on the famous Trolley Problem (below). Consider the options and write a paragraph to explain which you think is the morally better option and why.

Then watch the second video on different kinds of moral reasoning (below). Take notes on the meaning of the terms ‘consequentialist’ and ‘deontological’. Which of these best describes your answer to question 1? Now that you understand these terms, can you explain your view any further? Bring your notes in to the first RS lesson, ready to discuss with others.
