Japanese Beginners Level 3

This 10-week course is for people who have attended for two terms or those who want to improve their basic skills in Japanese. The aim of the course is to develop your confidence and ability to communicate effectively in authentic situations such as social occasions, towns and shops. The focus is on conversation, i.e. listening and speaking. Basic kanji will be introduced, so that students will can recognise simple writing in Japanese. Handouts will be provided by the tutor.


This course feeds into Lower Improvers in the spring term 2020.


The course book is "Japanese for Busy People 1" Revised 3rd Edition Kana version (AJALT - Association for Japanese Language Teaching / ISBN 4-7700-3009-6).


Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, you will have been given the opportunity to:


- Talk about the whereabouts of things and people

- Talk about what you will do, when, and where  

- State how frequently you do something and give a brief reason for why you do it

- Talk about the characteristics of things and people (using adjectives)

- Express your thoughts and experience (using adjectives)

- Express gratitude (using adjectives)

- Learn some kanji (numbers and dates)   


Your Tutor

Setsuko Jerome Setsuko Jerome trained in Tokyo and taught Japanese as a foreign language for over 20 years. She has taught at all levels, from state primary to university and is also responsible for a number of Cambridge exams for Japanese. She is particularly interested in bilingualism and second language acquisition.
