Running your own business

This course covers everything a new business owner should know. It is equally suitable for budding entrepreneurs and those who already have a small business up and running.

The course content is designed to be entertaining as well as informative, with examples from Dragons Den and real-life stories of successful (and less successful) start-ups from the UK and around the world. There will be a range of activities to teach you the realities of running your own business and generating revenue quickly with minimal up-front risk.

 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, you will have covered the following main topic areas:

  • starting up a business: business ideas, company structures, preparing to start a business
  • the external environment: analysing the environment in which your business trades, the competition
  • core ideology: core purpose, importance of values, having a long term vision
  • pitching your business to others: presenting key information, what's important
  • finance: core aspects of accounting, book-keeping, understanding financial statements, options as to how to do accounts
  • business processes: important things to know about human resources, other processes eg technology, business continuity
  • risk management:  how to analyse business risk
  • marketing: analysing the market for a product, marketing strategy
  • business planning: what's important
  • creativity: techniques for idea generation and problem-solving
  • review of the course

 

Your Tutor

Neil Shearer Neil Shearer MBA, BSc, FCMI is a senior executive with significant strategic and operational business experience. He is also a highly developed leader with planning, project management and analytical skills. Neil is an accredited Coach on the Government Backed Growth Accelerator Programme, a qualified Prince2 Practitioner and a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute.   Neil is a director with CB1 Associates a consultancy delivering improved business performance. His most recent corporate role was with MRC Technology, a healthcare life science business, as Director of Corporate Resources. Prior to this he was involved in establishing UK Sport, the organisation supporting British Olympic athletes, as Director of Corporate Services. Neil commenced his career at Whitbread PLC with a background in strategic planning, culminating in his role as Commercial Director.
