British Sign Language Beginners Level 1

This course is designed for students who have very limited or no previous knowledge of British Sign Language (BSL).The course is based on a communicative approach and aims to enable students to understand and use BSL effectively for purposes of practical communication with deaf people, to develop understanding of sentence syntax and to offer insights into Deaf Culture.

 

Learning Outcomes

 By the end of the course you will have been given the opportunity to:

· Learn to fingerspell and lip-read

·Meet and greet people

· Learn numbers

· Describe colours

· Introduce yourself (name, age, where you live)

· Describe your family

· Talk about the weather, months of the year and the seasons

· Give directions

· Discuss transport

· Describe animals and pets

· Practise shopping for food and clothes

 

You will also have learnt some basic BSL syntax, in particular:

· Verbs

· Negative and positive face expressions

· Use of questions

· Prepositions

 

Your Tutor

Zrinka Mendas Dr Zrinka Mendas is a fellow of Higher Education Academy and has a doctorate in Economics from Kingston University in Surrey. Zrinka is passionate about the BSL and has taught it at the University of the Third Age in Cambridge since 2012. She is also a social scientist with research interest in support for disabled academic staff and inclusive working practices in higher education. She mentored students with a wide spectrum of learning impairment, including deafness, dyslexia, ADHD and visual impairment.
