This course is aimed at students who already have some elementary knowledge of English (at about A2 level in the Common European Framework). The aim is to build upon the English learnt at an elementary stage and develop your understanding of grammar, extend vocabulary and practise the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Reading: students will work with a variety of short factual reading texts, eg signs, notices, instructions, brochures, guides, personal correspondence and informative articles from newspapers and magazines.
Writing: students will be able to perform a number of short everyday writing tasks, such as emails, postcards, notes, short letters and invitations.
Listening: students will learn to understand and respond to dialogues and monologues, including telephone conversations and recorded messages, in both informal and neutral settings on a range of everyday topics. They will also learn to extract relevant factual information from what they hear.
Speaking: students will be able to interact with each other in English. They will be able to answer and ask questions about themselves and about a picture. They will be introduced to such skills as paraphrasing and asking for clarification.
The course will prepare students for the Key English Test (KET) and your tutor will advise you to take this test when she feels you are ready. You can enter for it online via the Cambridge English website.
Please note: If you are new to the college you may want to take the OUP online placement test to ensure that you are placed in the appropriate course for your level of English. You should enrol for 'ESOL with diagnostic test' in the first instance.
