Young Frankenstein : Vocal audition guidance

Young Frankenstein Christmas Production

Adapted from the classic Mel Brooks film masterpiece, Young Frankenstein is a wickedly funny musical with unforgettable musical numbers.

Vocal auditions for roles with an extensive singing part will initially take place through student submission of a short video. Please read the instructions below.

Audition requirements

Please video record your piece with or without backing track or piano accompaniment; it is entirely up to you. Feel free to adjust the speeds if you sing without backing track. The backing track doesn’t have to be audible on the video you submit. You can just have it playing into your headphones if you wish.

Please follow the tips below about making this recording so that it is as clearly audible as possible.

Your video should be submitted by email to musicperfs@hillsroad.ac.uk by 12 noon on Monday 16 June.

If you have any questions about the vocal audition requirements, including the technical side, please email Mark Davis, Senior Music Technician, at mdavis@hillsroad.ac.uk.

Before recording, please make sure to follow the guidelines below to ensure you capture your performance in the best way possible.

  • Please try to be somewhere relatively quiet (no TV on in the background etc!)
  • Please record in landscape format, not portrait format, so wide and not tall. If you’re recording on a phone, set it sideways.
  • Please do a test recording first, before submitting your video, to check for any distortion caused by singing too loudly/closely to your phone or computer mic. Standing a few metres back should help minimise the above issue.
  • Ignore this if you don’t understand it: ideal settings are high quality, up to 1080p HD, please don’t go up to 4K as we’ll have to convert the file down again.
  • When submitting your video, please remember to name your file appropriately, i.e., your name and Young Frankenstein upper / lower vocal, and submit it to the email address provided above.

Vocal auditions for roles with an extensive singing part will initially take place through student submission of a short video.

Video vocal auditions are only required if you are interested in a role with quite a bit of solo singing. Regardless of which character you might be interested in playing, please record yourself singing

EITHER

Listen to Your Heart

if you are interested in an upper-range lead vocal part

OR

Together Again

if you are interested in a lower range lead vocal part. You can sing up to page 34 of the score and if you want to continue further, you can choose to sing the Frederick or the Igor part, it's up to you!

Links to the backing tracks for each song and the sheet music are available below:
