Christmas musical vocal auditions

Come and audition for our hilarious Y12 Christmas musical production: How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying!

We are auditioning for a slick, sleek and smooth-talking bunch of Y12 performers who want to make an uproarious and uplifting show.

Vocal auditions

Vocal auditions for roles with an extensive singing part will initially take place through student submissions of short videos.

The closing date to submit your audition is 12 noon, Friday, 26 June 2026.

Remember: You must also register your interest in our on-campus auditions, which are taking place on 2 and 3 July 2026. Please see your email for more information.

It would be really useful for those who are shortlisted for lead roles to pop to Hills Road on the morning of our college Open Event on Saturday 4 July to do some informal open rehearsals with the emerging Business Band. We will be in touch about rehearsal times, once we have watched all the initial vocal audition videos.

Video auditions and parts

Vocal auditions for roles with an extensive singing part will initially take place through student submission of a short video.

Video vocal auditions are only required if you are interested in a role with quite a bit of solo singing. Regardless of which character you might be interested in playing, please record yourself singing either of the following:

Happy to Keep His Dinner Warm

If you are interested in an upper-range lead vocal part

OR

Rosemary

If you are interested in a lower range lead vocal part.

Aim to learn the whole song, but don’t worry if you can only manage to prepare part of it. However much you have time to learn, sing with complete conviction when you are ready to record!

The songs are available on Spotify if you would like to listen to a performance.

Links to the backing tracks for each song and the sheet music are available below.

Filming your audition

Please record your piece as a video, with or without a backing track or piano accompaniment; it is entirely up to you. Feel free to adjust the speeds if you sing without a backing track. The backing track doesn’t have to be audible on the video you submit. You can just have it playing into your headphones if you wish. Please follow the tips below to make this recording as clearly audible as possible.

Your video should be submitted by email by 12 noon, Friday, 26 June.

Before recording, please follow these guidelines to ensure you capture your performance as well as possible:

  • Find a space that is relatively quiet, with no TV on in the background etc.
  • Record in landscape format, not portrait format (wide, not tall). If you’re recording on a phone, set it sideways.
  • Do a test recording first, before submitting your video, to check for any distortion caused by singing too loudly/closely to your phone or computer mic. Standing a few metres back should help minimise this issue.
  • Ignore this if you don’t understand it: ideal settings are high quality, up to 1080p HD. Please don’t go up to 4K, as we’ll have to convert the file down again.

Please state your name clearly at the start of your video recording and then briefly outline your vocal experience by following the guidance below and stating this to the camera:

  1. Your name, current school and which A level courses you are intending to take at Hills Road.
  2. Your voice type, e.g. Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass – or just say high/low if unsure
  3. Your comfortable vocal range, e.g. G below middle C up to 2 octaves higher
  4. If you have a vocal teacher, and the length of time you have been having lessons
  5. Your vocal experience, e.g. school musical productions/choirs/singing exams
  6. If you are more interested in a role with just a small amount of solo singing, or are ready to brave a part with extensive solo singing.
  7. Any other relevant information you would like to share.

Submitting your video

Please remember to name your file appropriately, e.g. your name and Business upper/lower vocal, and submit it using the email button below.
