Educating for a carbon neutral future

Following the success of Hills Road Law Society’s first student-run essay competition, Eliska Hradilova was awarded first place for her thoughtful and well-researched response. Here, she reflects on her approach and key insights.How did you prepare for the essay competition?


To prepare, I began by defining the key terms in the question. For example, I defined international law as rules governing relationships between states. From there, I created a set of guiding questions, such as: What laws already exist? How effective are treaties? How are they regulated? This helped me understand the topic and stay focused on the question. I also explored different forms of regulation and compiled key contextual points through further research.

What did you learn from the experience?
I developed a clearer approach to essay planning and time management. I also deepened my understanding of the topic beyond what I included in the essay. Importantly, I improved my ability to find relevant, up-to-date research and cite it properly. Learning to use JSTOR effectively with targeted keywords was especially valuable.

What skills did you develop?


I strengthened my research, organisation, and planning skills. Efficient research was essential to avoid irrelevant material, and careful planning helped me maintain a clear and consistent argument throughout both my preparation and writing.

What was your main argument?


One of the most interesting aspects I explored was the tension between international law and national sovereignty. Since international law cannot strictly bind states without challenging sovereignty, I examined how such laws can be implemented effectively. I also considered whether laws should vary depending on individual countries’ needs, highlighting the complexity of international law.

Will you enter more competitions in the future?


Yes. Essay competitions are a great opportunity to explore ideas in depth and engage with topics I find interesting.

What advice would you give to others?


Start early; preparation is essential. Research does not have to be limited to complex academic articles; accessible sources can be just as useful. It is important to establish your position early and maintain it throughout. Creating a list of key contextual points can also help keep your argument focused.

What did you enjoy most about the competition?


I particularly enjoyed exploring different perspectives on the topic. While it is easy to take a single stance, I found it rewarding to consider alternative arguments and refine my own position. This allowed me to strengthen my reasoning by addressing challenges and demonstrating why my argument was the most convincing.
