On Friday 5 December, Hills Road students gathered for a night of fun, music and dancing at the Winter Ball, an annual event organised by the Student Council. Reuben Cowell (Events Officer) tells us more...

“After a stressful first few months at college, it was wonderful to see the Hills Road community come together to celebrate the Christmas period together at our Winter Ball!"

HRSFC Winter Ball battle of bands

Crowd wowed by Battle of the Bands

"The evening showcased some of the incredible talent at Hills Road. The Recital Room became the arena for a Battle of the Bands (shown left) between five exceptional student groups: Hyperbolic Funk, Input 6, Paraphernalia, Zephyrus, and Romsey.

Each band put on an outstanding performance, and the audience vote added a fantastic sense of energy and excitement. Congratulations goes to Hyperbolic Funk, who won with their entertaining funk set.

All the bands were brilliantly supported by our in-house Music Tech students, who demonstrated their growing expertise in live sound by running the event with real professionalism, and adapting to technical challenges that the evening presented."

A packed dancefloor

"Meanwhile, the Hall was transformed into a vibrant disco space, complete with beautiful lighting and an electric atmosphere. Our DJ, Keira Lei, kept the room buzzing with a great mix of tracks and took requests that had everyone on their feet.

One of the highlights of the night was a fantastic four-song set from our very own Vascosax (image right), whose high-quality saxophone performance brought everyone together for the final half hour. It was the perfect way to end a truly special night."

A community effort - thank you!

"Our exceptional catering team kept everyone fuelled throughout the night with delicious food - from hot dogs to festive mince pies - ensuring we stayed energised as we danced the evening away. Special thanks and appreciation go to the College Estates team who worked tirelessly to set up and pack down as well as ensuring the smooth running of the night.

This great event could not have happened without the staff and students who gave their time to make the Winter Ball possible. From those helping in the cloakroom, to the café staff and music tech students, we really do appreciate all your help!

I would also like to give a particular shout out to Joel Wood (@cambridge.visuals) for providing the beautiful pictures you see in this article."

"The 2025 Winter Ball was a fantastic celebration of our students’ creativity and community spirit. It was wonderful to see so many young people enjoying themselves and showcasing their talents. A huge thank you to the Student Council for their hard work in organising such a memorable evening, and to the staff volunteers who generously gave up their time to support the event. It really reflects the vibrant culture we have here at Hills Road."
