Iain Lee, Teacher of English and Progress & Support Tutor at Hills Road, received the 2026 Student Support Champion Award, which recognises educators who have made a significant contribution to students' journeys to higher education.

The Inspiring Educator Awards, held annually by the University of Cambridge, recognise teachers and advisers who support students from UK state schools and colleges with a limited history of progression to Cambridge.

The Student Support Champion Award, of which Iain was the 2026 recipient, specifically recognises educators who provide practical and emotional support to students facing challenging circumstances.

Iain won following a nomination from a former Hills Road student who went on to study at Cambridge. The student, who preferred to remain anonymous, nominated Iain for the support he provided during her university application journey. Iain supported her across six UCAS application cycles, providing practical guidance and encouragement as she navigated personal and educational challenges.

In its award citation, the University of Cambridge said judges were "very touched by [Iain's] unfailing belief in the potential of each and every student" and highlighted the environment he created, enabling students to feel heard and supported in applying to Cambridge.

Iain attended the awards celebration at the University of Cambridge on Friday 19 June, alongside winners from across the country. Hills Road Sixth Form College also received £300 to spend on educational resources as part of the award.

Reflecting on the awards ceremony, Iain said: "Each student gave so much thought and affection to their teachers - this was so moving. The day was, appropriately, shaped by immersive conversations, and gaining vivid insights into how the student has adapted to the level of learning and its pace, and carried forward their aspirations. The day also strongly validated the commitment, encouragement and belief of the teachers – going beyond – which I feel exists in every school."

The award is a fitting recognition of the dedication Iain brings to supporting students through some of the most challenging stages of their educational journeys, and everyone at Hills Road Sixth Form College warmly congratulates him on this achievement!

"Whilst this award reflects the support Iain has given to one student, it also represents the meticulous, compassionate and student-centred support that he provides every day. We are incredibly proud to see his commitment recognised in this way."
