Greek (Modern) Beginners Level 1

This course is suitable for those who have no knowledge of Modern Greek. You will concentrate on topics such as the alphabet, counting and using numbers, personal introductions, giving information about address and telephone numbers, countries and professions, family and marital status

Lessons will be taught from "Communicate in Greek" by K and F Arvanitakis Vol 1 (ISBN 978-960-7914-38-5), chapters 1-6. 


Learning Outcomes

 By the end of the course you will

  • Be confident enough to take part in simple conversations
  • Be able to understand simple texts
  • Be able to ask for basic information
  • Have acquired some knowledge about Greek culture and heritage


You will also have studied the following aspects of grammar:

  • The present tense of the verb ε?μαι (to be)
  • The present tense of type A  verbs (?χω, μ?νω)
  • The present tense of type B1 verbs (μιλ?ω)
  • Singular nouns in the three genders (nominative case)
  • Use of the accusative case with prepositions


Your Tutor

Lucy Drew Lucy Drew is a Greek native speaker and a graduate of the University of Athens. She is a fully qualified teacher, with a PGCE from the University of Cambridge, and has over 25 years’ experience in teaching Modern Greek to a variety of age groups, primarily adults, at several levels, from absolute beginners to GCSE and AS level. Lucy is very enthusiastic about her subject and is always keen to help her learners to acquire the skills they need in order to communicate effectively in Modern Greek. She also enjoys sharing her love of Greek culture with her students.
