Japanese Beginners Level 1

This course will suit beginners who have no previous knowledge of Japanese or those who need to refresh their memory. The aim of the course is to develop your confidence and ability to communicate effectively in authentic situations such as social occasions, towns, hotels and shops. The focus of the course is on conversation, i.e. listening and speaking. Handouts will be provided by the tutor.

This course feeds into Beginners Level 2 in the spring term 2020 and Beginners Level 3 in the summer term 2020.

The course book is "Japanese for Busy people 1" revised 3rd edition/ Romanised Version [Kodansha USA] by the Association for Japanese Language Teaching.  The course book is not provided by the college and will need to be purchased by the student from any recognised bookshop.


Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course you will have been given the opportunity to:

Greet people and introduce yourself

Use numbers

Ask the size, colour and country of origin of an item and say how many you need in a shop

Talk about the times and dates

Take part in a simple conversation about holidays and the weekend

Talk about the whereabouts of things and people

Spell your name in Japanese


Your Tutor

Ayumi Houghton Ayumi Houghton is a native Japanese speaker with many years of teaching experience. She was born in Tokyo, Japan and got a BA in the US. She has a Diploma in teaching Japanese as a foreign language and has taught Japanese to English speaking students from many different age groups. She is also interested in learning foreign languages herself.

Please note full refunds can only be made if a class is cancelled or closed at the discretion of the College, or if you cancel your enrolment no less than two weeks before the course starts.
