The Reading Poetry course is for anyone who loves poetry, whether they are keen readers who would like to discover new poems and poets, or new readers who wish to learn more about a variety of poetry forms and themes while exploring poetry written by new and established poets. During the course, participants will read a substantial selection of some of the most influential poetry voices around the UK, US and Europe – past and contemporary.
Reading poetry together is a way to reflect on many experiences we encounter daily, whether they are related to love, loss, travel, dreams, longing, friendship, or our relationship with cities and nature. Participants will be encouraged to share their thoughts about the poems we read during each session, and engage in friendly discussions about the poetry.
Each session will be constructed around a specific theme or a particular poet. Some of the sessions will explore poetry on the theme of love, dreams, travel, nature and grief, among others. In other sessions, we will focus on specific poets, reading a key selection of each poet’s work. Some of the poets we will explore during the sessions are W. H. Auden, John Ashbery, Elizabeth Bishop, Eavan Bolland, TS Eliot, Louise Glück, Seamus Heaney, Kathleen Jamie, Czesław Miłosz, Brenda Shaughnessy, Wallace Stevens, Wislawa Szymborska and Natasha Trethewey among many others.
