The Level 1 Award in British Sign Language is a qualification for learners wanting to communicate in British Sign Language (BSL) on a range of everyday themes. Learners will gain the skills and confidence to understand and use BSL.
The qualification is suitable for those who want to:
· Learn basic language skills to communicate with Deaf people
· Progress to further study or employment using BSL
· Learn a new language for personal development
The Level 1 Award in British Sign Language will start on Tuesday 16 September 2025.
The Level 1 Award in British Sign Language will allow learners to:
· Understand and use a range of words and sentences in BSL
· Take part in everyday conversations in BSL
· Give and follow simple instructions or directions in BSL
· Give and follow simple statements or descriptions in BSL
The course will be delivered face-to-face at Hills Road Sixth Form College.
The qualification has three units, which are completed over the course of an academic year:
· BSL 101 – Introduction to BSL
· BSL 102 – Conversational BSL
· BSL 103 – Communication in BSL about Everyday Life
The three units cover a range of topics, including:
· Meeting people
· Using numbers
· Food and rink
· Interests and activities
· Describing people
· Animals and objects
· Sharing information
· Transport
· Directions
· Weather
To achieve the full Level 1 Award, learners must pass all three units.
The total number of learning hours is 90. This comprises 64 Guided Learning Hours and 26 hours of additional study.

Hills Road Sixth Form College is an accredited Centre for Signature - a national charity and the leading awarding body for deaf communication and language qualifications in the UK.
All Signature qualifications are nationally recognised and accredited by Ofqual (The office of the Qualifications and Examinations regulator). This includes the Level 1 Award offered at Hills Road.

Payment
Payment is made in full at the time of booking.
If you are booking a Level 3 or 4 Counselling course, you will be able to pay for this using a Direct Debit, which you will set up before the course starts in September. Please check the relevant course pages for details.
