The Introduction to The Odyssey course offers an accessible and rewarding introduction to Homer's famous epic poem. In advance of the release of Christopher Nolan's film The Odyssey this year, the course is designed for students encountering the poem for the first time, as well as those returning to Homer after many years.
The Introduction to The Odyssey course uses Daniel Mendelsohn's acclaimed 2024 translation, known for its clarity and narrative energy. Students will follow Greek hero Odysseus as he encounters goddesses, witches, one-eyed giants and man-eating monsters on his decade-long journey home from Troy.
The Introduction to The Odyssey course combines close readings of key passages in the text, group discussions on themes such as loyalty, grief and the meaning of home, as well as an exploration of the poem's cultural context and its enduring influence on literature, specifically science fiction, fantasy and even travel literature.
