About the Course

Is English Language for you? The answer is ‘Yes’ if you’re up for open minded investigation of what the language was in the past, is now, and may become in the future. Are technology and young people ruining the language? Will English be the world language? Are children especially hard-wired to work out language for themselves? Do women and men communicate differently? Is accent discrimination the last acceptable prejudice? Is the rhetorical question an overused stylistic device?

You’ll get to carry out your own language investigation project. You’ll discuss issues in class. You’ll write evaluative essays, analyses of spoken, written and electronic texts, and you’ll produce original writing in a genre of your choice. It’s both analytical and creative. What’s not to like?
