The Watercolour Painting Summer School course is ideal for both beginners and those with some experience who want to explore watercolour techniques in a focused, creative environment.
This Watercolour Painting Summer School course offers a hands-on, immersive experience for anyone looking to develop their watercolour painting skills. Whether you're new to painting or looking to refine your technique, you’ll explore a range of subjects and methods that will expand your creative vocabulary. Over the course of the workshop, you’ll gain confidence in your ability to observe, interpret and express visual ideas through watercolour.
Each day, you will explore different subject matter - still life, urban landscape, and the human figure - learning how to translate complex images into simple forms by controlling light and shadow. You’ll examine how painting theory is expressed in the work of great watercolourists from the 18th century to the present, and be introduced to a variety of working methods to broaden your painting vocabulary.
The main focus will be on controlling colour contrast and value, using positive and negative shapes to describe form, and selecting the visual features that make a composition work. You’ll produce many quick outline sketches to hone your observation skills and practise techniques such as wet-in-wet, dry brush, and paint lifting. There will also be opportunities to paint from life and take part in discussions on tonal painting, visual texture, and colour choices.
