Introduction to Jane Austen's Emma

The Introduction to Jane Austen’s Emma course is an accessible and entertaining introduction to Jane Austen’s last novel to be published in her lifetime. The course is designed for students encountering Austen’s work for the first time, as well as those returning to Austen after many years.

About the course

The course explores what makes Austen’s novels so popular more than 200 years after they were written. With a focus on Emma, students will explore the characters, plot and themes, as well as the context that Austen’s milieu brought to her works.

The course combines close reading of selected passages from Emma, focused questions and group discussions. Each session will include a focus on a particular passage from the novel and a specific theme.
