This Autumn Term I shall be finishing the personal overview of the History of Art in Europe which I began on Thursdays in the summer.
It will consist of a series of snapshots rather than a connected narrative. But hopefully it will have something for everyone, both beginners and those who are already familiar with the subject. We shall be covering the period from the 16th c. through to the 21st c. and be examining a host of key pieces, both familiar and unusual. There will be sessions on such iconic works as the Sistine Chapel in Rome, on Hogarth and Picasso. But we shall also be looking at the wonderful pleasure palace of Amalienburg in Munich, the devastating work of the German, Jewish, painter, Felix Nussbaum and the love-affirming art of Chris Ofili. There will be the opportunity to study pieces of architecture and sculpture as well as paintings. Europe’s artistic heritage is second to none – wonderfully inventive and humane, it is full of works which not only entrance the eye but stimulate the mind and move the heart. Come along and get to grips with the exciting world of Art History!
An optional, Saturday, trip to the Tate Modern, London, will be organised
