Introduction to Mandolin Course

The Introduction to Mandolin course is ideal for beginners and intermediate players looking to develop their technique, expand their repertoire, and build confidence playing solo or with others. This inclusive and supportive course also welcomes players of related instruments such as the mandola.

About the course

This Introduction to Mandolin course offers a practical and engaging environment for anyone keen to explore the expressive potential of this versatile instrument. Whether you're picking up the mandolin for the first time or looking to refine your skills, you’ll be guided through a variety of musical styles and traditions from around the world.

You’ll learn through a mix of solo and group playing, with music provided in a range of formats including standard notation, tablature, chord charts, and audio/video links. While some experience reading music is helpful, it’s not essential - support will be tailored to your level and learning style.

Throughout the course, you’ll explore mandolin music from diverse traditions including Italian, Brazilian, American, and British folk, as well as accessible classical pieces. Each style introduces different techniques and musical approaches, giving you the opportunity to develop skills such as:

- Reading music
- Playing by ear or from memory
- Accompanying other musicians
- Improvising with confidence

The course is designed to accommodate a range of experience levels. Core techniques and musical concepts will be introduced to the whole group, with options for more experienced players to explore advanced variations. Rather than following a single method book, the tutor will provide a curated selection of materials to support your progress.
