Alice's Work Experience at Hills Road

05 September 2019
During July, I was on work experience for two weeks at Hills Road Sixth Form College. If I’m honest, I had no idea what to expect as I had never really seen what went on behind the scenes at a College, and I definitely had no grasp on how much had to be done.

I spent the first morning on Reception with Anna, where I distributed lanyards, signed people in and printed off student’s stickers. It really helped me to understand what all the different areas of the College are for, and I gained some basic knowledge of what the role of a Receptionist involves.

I then went to Marketing, where I evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of other colleges’ social media and websites. After Marketing, I was off to the Sports and Tennis Centre where I got a taste of all kinds of different roles such as taking bookings, recording payments and cleaning the tennis courts! This was also really interesting as it was more hands-on than some of the other tasks I had been doing, and I really loved the friendly and relaxed working environment. Then it was back to Marketing, where I helped to select photos for the prospectus and also got a chance to head off around the College, taking photos for social media posts.

I also spent a day in the library where I experienced the College from yet another completely different angle. I helped to sort out the books, created a 'Recommended Reads' display and checked books in and out.

Spending time in the Bursary was completely different from all the other departments. It was insightful because I got to see how the work delivered by the other areas in the College all tied back to the Bursary. This included seeing how tasks I had previously completed, such as counting the money in the till in the Sports Centre, linked back to the Bursary.

Overall, I had an amazing two weeks at Hills Road, and I learnt more about the working world while getting hands-on experience of a variety of different jobs. I had the opportunity to work independently and get on with tasks and then receive constructive and helpful feedback. I have also had the chance to meet and talk to a whole range of new people, which has really helped my communication.

I would like to thank all the staff at Hills Road for being so warm and accommodating and making me feel like part of the team during my two weeks.
