Conditions of Entry to Hills Road

Overview of admissions entry criteria for A level courses

(please see the Admissions Policy for further details)

For enrolment, we usually expect applicants to achieve:
  • a GCSE profile broadly equivalent* to four subjects at grade 6 and four at grade 5, including English Language and Maths
  • the specific grade requirements for chosen A level subjects, as specified in our prospectus and here
* The equivalence of GCSE profiles is based on our admissions score, for which the following tool is available: admissions score calculator

One reason for the excellent examination results achieved by our students is the care with which we ensure that they embark on courses and subjects that are well suited to their abilities and interests. In this regard, we are unable to guarantee to enrol a student whose examination results do not meet the above expectations. We shall consider any such cases on their own merits during the enrolment period. For example, it may be possible for us to agree an alternative course with an applicant for which they are qualified.

If an applicant’s results are lower than estimated but they still meet the above entry requirements, we shall aim to allow them to follow their offered course (though enrolment to a fourth A level subject, if applicable, is likely to be at risk if results are appreciably lower). Where changes to offered subjects prove necessary, for reasons such as timetable clashes or oversubscription of particular subjects, guidance will be offered about suitable alternatives.

The Extended Curriculum

In addition to A level subjects, students are required to participate in the College’s Extended Curriculum which includes the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), Enrichment and tutorial activities.

School reference

Places are normally offered to students who have the full support of their present school or college. Our offer is subject to this remaining unchanged for the remainder of the academic year.

Unless the College has approved exceptional arrangements in advance, students must continue to live at home with their parent(s) throughout their course.

Places are offered on the understanding that information provided on the application form is true at the time of writing. If false information is supplied, the College reserves the right to withdraw its offer of a place.
